Abstract

The work presents the curriculum vitae of Vinko Paletin, a very important person in Croatian history. He lived in the 16th century and was a very omniscient person – Dominican, theologian, historian, naval theoretician, mathematician, travel writer, jurist and diplomat, and this work researches especially his contribution to cartography. Special place is given to his map of Spain from 1551 that he made on the basis of acquired data and his own measurements. Due to such an approach, this map was acknowledged even in his time and served as a source for many later versions. The inscription to the bishop Francisco of Navarra placed in the lower right corner of the map and which reveals details about the production of this map is published for the first time translated into Croatian and English.
