Abstract

The 10th International Geography Olympiad took place in Kyoto, Japan, from June 30th to August 5th 2013. International Geography Olympiads, competitions for students who are between 16 and 19 years old, are being held under the auspices of the International Geographical Union (IGU) since 1996, when the 1st Olympiad took place in The Hague, The Netherlands. Until 2012 they were held every second year, but now they are being organized every year. The main aims of the Geography Olympiads are to stimulate active interest in geographical studies among young people, to contribute positively to debate about the importance of geography as a school subject by drawing attention to the quality of geographical knowledge, skills and interests among young people and to facilitate social contacts between young people from different countries and to contribute to the understanding between nations. The official language of the Olympiad is English.
