Croatian Gazetteer Service on the Internet

Željko Hećimović

Abstract

According to the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN), umbrella organization for geographical name standardization, a gazetteer is a list of toponyms arranged in alphabetic or other order, with data about their position, object and if possible, variations, and it also contains other information. A gazetteer contains reference data which are used together with a map. Nevertheless, geographical names are not just a part of a map; they are an important communication means which reflects the historical and cultural development of an area. The Croatian Geodetic Institute published the Gazetteer of the Republic of Croatia at http://cgnd.cgi.hr:8081.
