By Students in the Multimedia Cartography course at Faculty of Geodesy, University of Zagreb in Academic year 2015/16A compelling multimedia narrative story of the Syrian refugee crisis across Europe (www.geof.unizg.hr/~akuvezdic/MultimediaCartography-Course2016.html) was envisioned by a group of graduate students enrolled in Multimedia Cartography, a course offered through the Faculty of Geodesy at University of Zagreb (eucenje.geof.unizg.hr). This multimedia visualization was created as an assignment for the course exercises during the summer 2016 academic term, in which students had to choose arbitrarily a subject to be visualized in a multimedia environment to explore the effects and components of a multimedia map.

Engraving in the topographic mapping was substituted by digital methods originated on CAD-technology in Switzerland, in the beginning of 2001. At the same time there were two major projects started as well, with the objective that future production completely redirects towards producing the vector GIS-data: TLM and OPTIMA-LK.

By accepting European norms for construction design, Croatia also accepted the principle of embedding national specificities, primarily referring to natural phenomena (wind, earthquake, snow, temperature) into eachstandard, i.e. to create special annexes for a certain norm with defined national parameters. In accordance with these standards, the Croatian Standards Institute (Hrvatski zavod za norme – HZN) ordered from the Faculty of Geodesy in Zagreb a cartographic map processing of snow areas, the lowest and highest air temperatures and basic wind speeds for the territory of the Republic of Croatia.

The primary use of Google Maps is navigation on land and finding a route for travelling by car, public transport, bike, airplane or on foot. It is hard to find a tool better suited for these tasks than Google Maps. When travelling by car is considered, the application provides one or more routes, each with corresponding length in km or miles and time needed to reach the destination. The recommended route is given coloured blue, while others are grey. For public transport routes, e.g. in Zagreb, it lists numbers of tram and bus lines and travelling time.

The Croatian Mountain Rescue Service (CMRS) donated maps it has published so far to the Croatian Cartographic Society (CCS). Considering I had already reviewed some maps published by CMRS, my colleague Prof. Dr. Miljenko Lapaine, president of CCS, suggested me to write a review of these maps. I analysed three tourist-hiking maps in detail: Island of Vis, Biokovo and Orjen-Sniježnica.Basic elements of the three maps were analysed, i.e.: title with subtitles and the title page, represented area, field and orientation, content, scale and format, projection data, legend, map graphics, generalization, author (production) and production date, publisher and circulation, production and printing type, sources and other secondary map elements.

Tourist map – Central Dalmatia – Split-Dalmatia County and Regional map Central Dalmatia, Split and surroundings – School map – Split-Dalmatia County Some time ago, I stumbled upon two different maps of the Split-Dalmatia County. At first, I noticed how different they were concerning colours, data amount and representation, as well as arrangement of outer lettering elements. I was surprised even more when I read that both maps were produced by the same authors. This motivated me to analyse the maps in more detail and present the results of their comparison.

Dr. Drago Novak (1933–2011) was a prominent doctor of medicine and scientist, world traveller and global citizen, kind host and always a welcome guest, particularly known as a collector, admirer and connoisseur of old maps of Croatia. In addition, he was an admirer of fine art, a passionate seeker of books on cartography, history, art and a wide range of other scientific and popular areas. According to his will, his rich collection of maps, atlases and books in the field of cartography, also known as The Novak Collection, became a part of The Collection of Maps and Atlases of The National and University Library in Zagreb. The main part of The Novak Collection was given to the library at the end of 2012 and the smaller part was purchased in 2013.

The Geological Map of the Republic of Croatia at the scale 1:300 000 is the first geological map displaying geological features of the Croatian territory in its entirety. The map and the accompanying Map Book were published in 2009 by the Croatian Geological Survey. The map’s content was compiled reusing data of the Basic Geological Map, scale 1:100 000, which was produced between 1962 and 1989. The map was finally completed by experts of the Department of Geology of the Croatian Geological Survey who were, as a rule, authors of individual sheets and map books of the Basic Geological Map. After the Basic Geological Map 1:100 000, it was the greatest and most significant piece of Croatian geologic cartography.

Countless Croatian and foreign tourists visit the Adriatic Sea and settlements along its coast each year. Some of them come to a town or a city for the first time, so they visit a tourist office. Most tourist offices provide complimentary maps of the visited area (town and city plans, maps of surrounding areas, hiking maps, maps for bicycle tours, etc.). Such maps should serve users and help them in various activities and answer a number of questions about space and spatial relations.
