ATLASES: Poetics, Politics, and Performance is a web exhibition of atlases from the Special Collections and School of Geographical Sciences of the University of Bristol (http://uobatlases.net/). It includes atlases produced between 1570 to approximately 1970.The exhibition consists of four thematic parts. Renaissance Theatres contains famous and les famous atlases produced between the end of the 16th century to the middle of the 17th century, such as atlases by Ortelius (1574), Camden (1610), Speed (1611) and four atlas tomes by Blaeu (1645). Rhetoric of Truth contains geological and archaeological atlases from the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century. However, Rhetoric of Truth is not only limited to renaissance, but it also encompasses first computer generated atlases, e.g. Atlas of Breeding Birds in England and Ireland (1976) and others. The Colonial Gaze focuses on atlases applied in colonial projects and land exploitation in Africa and the Caribbean Islands, as well as in circulation of race theories in Europe and North America at the end of the 19th century. The last part, National Identities and Conflict explores the role of atlas as a powerful instrument for visualizing conflicts and shaping territorial-political ideas in the 20th century.

117th EuroSDR meeting was held in Zagreb, from 27th to 29th October, organized by the State Geodetic Administration and the Croatian Geodetic Institute. It was the first time that Croatia entertained EuroSDR meeting. European Spatial Data Research (EuroSDR) is a pan-european organization for the field of geoinformation, which was established in 1959 and it is one of the oldest organizations from that field in Europe. Croatia has been a member of EuroSDR since 2007 and it has been the only member of EuroSDR which has not been a member of EU.

Exhibition Pax Anamarija, G&V Line Jadera, Zadar – Iž – Rava, 16–26 May 2014
The National Museum Zadar (Cultural-historical collection of the Island of Iž) and the University of Zadar prepared the exhibition Islands Iž and Rava on Old Maps on the occasion of the International Museum Day. The exhibition was set on a passenger ship Anamarija owned by company G &V Line Jadera which connects islands Iž and Rava with Zadar. Visitors, mostly passengers on that route and on the Zadar – Sali – Zadar route with the same ship could see the exhibition from May 16 to 26, 2014. Considering that 200 small catalogues were printed containing an introduction and a list of exhibits and that more catalogues had to be printed, it can be assumed that the exhibition of old maps was very interesting to inhabitants of Iž and Rava, as well as other people who wanted to see how those islands were represented on maps in the past. Vladimir Alavanja provided the idea for the exhibition, and its form and location were arranged with Josip Faričić from the Department of Geography of the University of Zagreb. Two passenger saloons aboard Anamarija were chosen as the location of the exhibition in order to present the exhibits to the inhabitants and frequent travellers from Iž to Rava in the way that the maps were contextualized in the space they represent. The exhibits were placed as sections of high-quality prints of 30 selected maps and charts. Sections of old maps were printed on a high-quality paper, framed and hanged in place of curtains on ships windows. Art historian Koraljka Alavanja conceived such an artistic arrangement.

On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the publication of the world map produced by Piri Reis in 1513, UNESCO proclaimed 2013 the Year of Piri Reis. For this occasion, the Turkish Foundation for Underwater Archaeology organized the exhibition titled Piri Reis – Cartographer of Suleiman the Magnificent in Croatia. The most important works of this famous cartographer from the time of Suleiman the Magnificent were presented at the exhibition. The exhibition was held in Rijeka (Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka, June 5 – September 3), Poreč (Native Museum of Poreč, September 5-30), Zagreb (Technical Museum, October 2 – November 10), and Dubrovnik (Ethnographic Museum, November 15 – December 30) as a part of a series of international events organized by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey on the occasion of the mentioned anniversary. Croatia was chosen to host this exhibition because there are many maps of Croatian cities and islands in Piri Reis’s book titled Kitab-i Bahriye (Book of Navigation) from 1521.

The exhibition Austrian Riviera – Vienna Reveals the Sea (Österreichische Riviera – Wien entdeckt das Meer) was opened in the Vienna City Museum in the middle of November 2013. The exhibition is a historical journey to favourite destinations of the Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy. Approximately 450 exhibits chronologically leads visitors from the opening of the Vienna – Trieste railway in 1857 to the great exhibition Adria in Prater in 1913. The „Austrian Riviera“ was in full tourist bloom in during precisely that period (1890–1914). It was helped by opening of the Monarhy’s railway network which connected Rijeka, Opatija and the Kvarner Gulf to Vienna in 1873. Traffic connections and suitable climate accelerated the development of health, family, fashion and art tourism. Larger Dalmatian cities (Split, Dubrovnik, Budva) were encompassed in addition to the Northern littoral. Numerous regional museums (from Trieste, Rijeka, Split, Opatija, etc.) provided their materials for the exhibition.

The 26th Session of the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN) was held in the UN Headquarters in Vienna from May 2-6, 2011. As opposed to previous UNGEGN sessions, which lasted two weeks, this session lasted five days. Thus the session program was reduced, which meant national reports were not presented individually, but as group reports.

Museums, galleries, archives and other cultural institutions were invited to organize open days and invite citizens, visitors and tourists to visit them by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia on the occasion of Croatia becoming a member of the European Union. The suggestion was to enable free access to existing or special programs, cultural events and celebrations. The Croatian State Archives responded and organized the exhibition Croatia and Europe: A Journey through Historical Maps, which could be seen in the atrium of the Croatian State Archives (CSA) from July 1 to 31, 2013. The exhibition featured the most valuable and attractive maps preserved in the Map Collection of CSA, which encompassed the period from the middle of the 16th century to the beginning of the 20th century. The goal of the exhibition was to present manuscript and printed maps, as well as thematic map facsimiles by various cartographers, whose maps represented Europe and Croatia more or less accurately, with regard to existing cartographic knowledge, knowledge of represented areas, maps’ purpose and circumstances they were produced in. There were charts, general and historical maps of Europe and Croatian lands, as well as demarcation maps through various periods. A total of 36 manu-script and copper-engraved maps were exhibited.
