In 2018, Izvori published another two volumes by academician Žarko Dadić, the eminent Croatian historian of science, and author of a score of books and large number of articles and papers on the history of mathematics, physics and astronomy. The new volumes are part of the series The History of Science and Natural Philosophy among the Croats (With Particular Reference to the Exact Sciences), the first volume of which appeared in 2015, and which the author himself describes as his life’s work. In 2018, the series continued with the publication of volumes IV and V (The Enlightenment and The Pre-Revival Age). The books are likely to attract the attention not only of the scientific and expert community, but also of a wider readership, due to the topics covered and periods researched.

The paper is a historical overview of beginnings of establishing trigonometric networks to determine the Earth's size and produce accurate maps. First, the book ''Five Books About All Kinds of Triangles'' from 1464 by Johannes Regiomontanus about existing trigonometry knowledge is described. This is followed by mention of Petrus Apianus and his book ''Cosmographicus Liber'' in which Reigner Gemma Frisius published his work in a supplement to a subsequent edition. In it, he proposed using trigonometric networks (triangulation) as an accurate method for determination of points on the Earth. It is little-known that the famous astronomer Tycho Brahe established a trigonometric network in Öresund, intending for it to become the foundation for producing a map of the entire Danish Empire. Unfortunately, he surveyed all required values in the trigonometric network, but did not calculate the trigonometric points' coordinates. Snellius (Willebrord Snel van Royen) was the first to establish a trigonometric network and calculate point coordinates and determined the Earth's size with the greatest accuracy of the time.

After New Cartographic Terms (Frančula, Lapaine 2022) and New Cartographic Terms 2 (Frančula, Lapaine 2023), we offer the readers of this journal New Cartographic Terms 3. The reason is an accelerated development of technology that creates new terms every day. Terms from computer science, especially artificial intelligence, necessary for cartographers are also included. All terms are arranged alphabetically. When a name consists of two or more words, the first is always a noun. For example, olfactory cartography is included in the dictionary as cartography, olfactory. A comma means that the usual word order is reversed. Terms in foreign languages are entered in the dictionary in the same way.A synonym of the term in the Croatian language is marked with also. Preference is given to the first term listed. If there are synonyms in a foreign language, they are separated by a semicolon (;).See refers to the terms that served in the definition of a certain term or are closely related to it. If that term was included in the Cartographic Dictionary (Frančula et al. 2020), or in previous lists of new cartographic terms, we did not list it here. Some additional information is given in the notes.

The article is a tribute to the ideas and efforts of Prof. Dr. Drago Novak, who founded and compiled the Novak Map Collection (Zbirka Novak). As a world traveller and professional radiologist, he was also a cartographer, collector and lover of old maps. The author also analyses some original, early, modern maps of the Dalmatian coastline and the role of local cartographers and copperplate engravers (Martin Rota and Natale Bonifacio) in the production of these maps and their significance for further cartographic development.

volunteered geoinformation (VGI); potential; completeness; OpenStreetMap (OSM)
en,hr
The development of technologies, especially the information and communications technology (ICT) and navigation technology, opened the possibility for collecting geospatial data to all interested parties. This trend has led to a new paradigm in the form of volunteered geoinformation (VGI). The speed of data collection as well as the amount of this data makes their use a great potential. On the other hand, there is a question of the quality of such data. They are by default collected by volunteers who have no formal training in the collection of spatial data. It is therefore important to examine the quality as well as to establish appropriate standards for data collection, but also for usage. This paper gives an overview of the phenomenon of VGI, its definition, the links with spatial data infrastructures (SDIs) and the possibilities of its use. Some examples of collecting through and using the various VGI-based applications in Croatia are shown. Furthermore, an analysis of data completeness in the case of OpenStreetMap has been performed. The results of this research indicate that the completeness of VGI depends primarily on the interests of those who collect and use them. In the case of the OpenStreetMap data for Croatia, it is evident that the content of information is more complete in urban as well as coastal areas, while this is not the case in suburban and rural areas. A general trend of collecting and increasing the amounts of VGI already provides an alternative to the official spatial databases to a certain extent. Through appropriate standardization, VGI data can serve as a good source for the database updating and maintenance.

Human aspiration to gather information in one place is thousands of years old. Many encyclopaedias were created through centuries, but only the digital era provided tools for simple browsing of large amounts of information. The first ideas of encyclopaedias on the Internet were born during the 1990s. The first project in that direction appeared at the end of 20th century, because the technical improvement of the Internet in terms of availability and transfer rate was achieved.

The basic task of cartography lies in efficient and impeccable transfer of spatial information via cartographic models of geospace. Wired and wireless communication networks serve this purpose. They offer new media possibilities of saving and transferring cartographic information and cartographic models, and therefore their use. This is related to the emphasis of research work and education, which is equally oriented toward theoretical issues and those concerning applied cartography. The paper features a review of cartographic education and accomplished qualifications at universities and professional schools (Fachhochschule) in Austria and a review of newly introduced study programs of Bachelor and Master studies according to guidelines of the Bologna Declaration. The education plan for the instruction of cartography for both studies at the Vienna University of Technology is presented in detail.

Cartography
map projections, distortion, flexion and skewness, visualization
en
A recent study on map projections expanded two new measures of distortion, namely flexion and skewness. However, it introduced them only for the unit sphere. The present paper derives formulas for the rotational ellipsoid and demonstrates that these kinds of distortion always have a unit of measurement. A new method of illustration is described, by which these quantities can be visualized in an expressive way.

At the beginning of the December 2013, it was announced that the successful year-long world-wide project Mathematics of Planet Earth 2013 (MPE2013) under the patronage of UNESCO will continue as Mathematics of Planet Earth (MPE)! The idea of Christiane Rousseau, the past president of the Canadian Mathematical Society, about uniting the world’s mathematicians in an effort to bring awareness to global issues has been worked out far beyond what she could have hoped.

Cartography
map projections; semiotic; Charles S. Peirce
en
Umberto Eco’s admiration for Charles S. Peirce (1839-1914) for ... earning a living by drawing maps ... combined with the pleasure of knowledge given by the diving to the history of our cartographic discipline, reminded me of a relevant sixty-year-old text about the great scientist and authentic thinker – maybe the greatest of Logic of his time. It is based on unpublished (until then) manuscript material, in his collection of the same name in the Houghton Library at Harvard. The sixty-year-old mathematician Carolyn Eisele (1902−2000) – devoted scholar of Peirce’s work – wrote the text in the early 1960s; it was then published in the Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society. The subject of her text is the problem of cartographic projection. But what can a cartographic projection problem have to do with logic and its practical applications, which is the greatest challenge to Peirce’s thinking?

Based on the analysis of cartographic sources, the paper analyses the historical and geographical development of the Kornati islands, the largest group of Croatian islands. The old maps were used first of all as the means of geographic research that, being necessarily correlated to the simultaneous historical written sources and modern topographic and maritime maps, make the basis for creating a research platform for relevant scientific results to be achieved. On the basis of the old maps it is possible, among other things to anticipate that the Kornati islands used to have great geotraffic significance on the eastern Adriatic sailing route. According to the development of geographic concepts and cartographic methods, the geographic vision of the Kornati islands has been gradually clarified ever since the 16th century. The chart from the Carta di cabotaggio del Mare Adriatico edition published by the Military and Geographic Institute from Milan (1822-1824) presents the turning point with the first complete and mostly precise presentation of the Kornati islands group on the basis of hydrographic and topographic field measurements.

Biographical and bibliographical information about Croatian cartographers has been collected systematically since 1995, firstly within the scientific project Croatian Cartographers, and subsequently within the research project Cartography and New Technologies, both carried out at the Faculty of Geodesy of the University of Zagreb. Afterwards, work on the collection and arrangement of material continued within the framework of the Cartography of the Adriatic project carried out on the same faculty. The basic sources of material about Croatian cartographers are databases or lists of maps in map collections, monographs, map exhibition catalogues, symposium proceedings, various memorial publications, encyclopaedias and lexicons, and many journals. Graduate and postgraduate students at the Faculty of Geodesy have studied Croatian cartographers as part of their seminar papers, undergraduate and master’s theses and dissertations. A database containing biographical and bibliographical information about Croatian cartographers was created based on all the material compiled. A biographical lexicon, Hrvatski kartografi (Croatian Cartographers), was published after 14 years of data compilation. This paper is not a copy of part of that lexicon. It contains new information, particularly on Matija Petar Katančić, Joszef Erdődy and Franz Xaver Müller. Moreover, a number of illustrations have been added in order to facilitate a better understanding of the cartographers' work. According to our definition, Croatian cartographers are Croatians, or people of Croatian origin who lived or live anywhere in the world and worked or work in the field of cartography. Members of other nations and nationalities who were born in Croatia, regardless of where they lived or live, and foreigners who lived and worked in Croatia or still do, contributing to cartography, are also considered as Croatian cartographers. The paper deals with several Croatian cartographers who are also Hungarian cartographers. Some of them were born in Hungary, some were educated there, but all were engaged in cartography in some way.

In this work, reading and registering of directions in modern electronic theodolites and electronic tacheometers Leica is described, and a simple way to achieve very high accuracy by using them. Besides, it is described how a simple two-axis compensator was constructed, which occupies little space and can be ideally centrically set in vertical axis of the instrument. This is why the liquid deviates very little from its horizontal position even during a fast rotation of alidade, which is very favourable and enables high accuracy.

Ghana is a country exceptionally rich in geologic mineral resources with contrasting topographic relief and varied geophysical setting. This paper evaluated the geological and geophysical setting of Ghana with a special focus on the impact of the geologic setting and topography on gravity. Specifically, it assessed how variations in geology, topography, landscapes and the environment control the geophysical parameters and how these vary among the major regions of the country – the Volta Basin, Northern Plains, Ashanti-Kwahu (Kumasi) and Coastal Plains in the Accra surroundings. Previous studies utilizing traditional Geographic Information System (GIS) approaches have documented the geologic evolution of Ghana evolved as a part of the West African Craton. As a contribution to the existing research, this paper presents a regional analysis of Ghana by integrated mapping of geology, geophysics and topography of the country. The technical approach of this research focuses on utilizing the console-based scripting cartographic toolset Generic Mapping Tools (GMT) integrated with QGIS for processing and mapping the datasets: General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans (GEBCO), Earth Gravitational Model 2008 (EGM-2008), gravity grids. The theoretical background is based on the geologic research of West Africa supported by high-resolution data. The paper defines a conceptual cartographic framework for integrated geologic and geophysical visualization in a regional-scale mapping project on Ghana.

Ferdinand Konšćak, cartography, Lower California
en,hr
The Jesuit Ferdinand Konšćak (1703–1759) from Varaždin was a Croatian explorer, missionary and cartographer in the Lower California area. Konšćak’s maps were published in 1757 in a work by Miguel Venegas and Marcos Buriel, Noticia de la California. The book appeared in Spanish, and later in English (1759), Dutch (1761/2), French (1766 and 1796/7) and German. In this paper, all the maps attributed to Ferdinand Konšćak are listed and presented for the first time, while the reproductions are taken from the highest quality editions. The places throughout the world where Konšćak’s maps are kept are also listed. In a separate table, the most important information regarding the maps presented in this paper is given in overview. Finally, it is concluded that the life and work of Ferdinand Konšćak have been insufficiently researched, particularly in regard to his cartographic contributions.

They are: determination of more accurate data about the first discoveries about the existence of representations of Croatian cities, the titles of the atlases and the time of their production. Incorrect signature citation is stressed, as well as the problem of incomplete data.

This paper aims to investigate whether Apian could be the developer of his namesake map projections. Evidences suggest that these mappings should not have been named after Apian. The most likely inventor of the Apian I map projection is Amerigo Vespucci, and the Apian II projection was probably developed only 300 years later by François Arago. Given that the case of Apian map projections is not a single example when the map projection is not named after its real inventor and the original authorship of more mappings might be questioned in the future, the cartographic community should revise, whether it is a good convention to name map projections after their supposed inventor.

cylindrical projection of an ellipsoid, Web Mercator projection
hr
The Web Mercator projection is a projection of a relatively recent date. There has been a lot of controversy about its application. Some believe that this projection is not a projection of either the sphere or the surface of the ellipsoid. Therefore, in this paper, several projections of the surface of a rotational ellipsoid into a plane are investigated and it is shown that the Web Mercator projection is one of such projections. Namely, although the equations of this projection are identical to the equations for the projection of the sphere, the basic difference is in the choice of the area of definition, i.e., the domain of the projection. Furthermore, we have shown that the Web Mercator projection can also be interpreted as double mapping: mapping an ellipsoid to a sphere according to the normals and then mapping the sphere to the plane according to the formulas of the Mercator projection for the sphere. The Web Mercator projection is not a conformal projection, but it is close in properties to the Mercator projection.

The term Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) is not new and has already been present in the world for quite a long time. President Clinton's Executive Order 12906 from April 1994 played a crucial role and was an initiative in establishing National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI). This Order induced briskly the building of NSDI and also of all additional counterparts in the USA and around the whole world. Besides NSDI, various other initiatives at regional (EUROGI, PCGIAP, …) and global level (GSDI) were also launched. In this paper, an overview of different initiatives and efforts in establishing SDI in Croatia will be presented. State bodies such as the Government and State Geodetic Administration have the main role in it in collaboration with public and commercial sector and also with academic community. As the main factor in creating a future SDI, State Geodetic Administration has launched several initiatives the goal of which is the installation of new technologies, equipment and procedures in map production and the establishment of digital topographic and cadastre databases. The arrangement and modernization of spatial records and the establishment of NSDI make the key factors for sustainable physical planning and land development at local and national level. In the next few years Croatia must solve numerous duties to arrange spatial records. These duties must be solved very conscientiously and in a reasonable period of time. It is very important for Croatian prosperity and for the fulfilment of the conditions set in the process of entering European and international integrations.

The paper describes the Croatian web page Online ephemerides with its applications for calculating and visualising the equation of time and the analemma, converting zone time (zone or civil time) into true solar time (the time shown by sundials) and calculating the time of sunrise and sunset and the corresponding azimuths. The calculated values for the equation of time, ephemeris transit and the true solar time of ±4 seconds, sunrise and sunset times of ±30 seconds and the azimuth of ±30” must meet the accuracy needed by both amateur and professional astronomers. The web applications described are also adapted for smart phones.

topographic map updating; satellite images
hr; en
The investigation of interpretability of panchromatic satellite image IRS-1C integrated with multispectral Landsat TM image with the purpose of updating the topographic map sheet at the scale of 1:25 000 has been described. The geocoding of source map was based on trigonometric points of the map sheet. Satellite images were geocoded using control points selected from the map. The contents of map have been vectorized and topographic database designed. The digital image processing improved the interpretability of images. Then, the vectorization of new contents was made. The change detection of the forest and water area was defined by using unsupervised classification of spatial and spectral merged images. Verification of the results was made using corresponding aerial photographs. Although this methodology could not insure the complete updating of topographic map at the scale of 1:25 000, the database has been updated with huge amount of data. Erdas Imagine 8.3. software was used.

IGSM (International Geodetic Students Meeting) is an international meeting of students from geodetic and similar faculties which has been held for 23 years. It all began with the Technical University students’ meeting in the Dutch city Delft which was held in order to compare programs of European geodetic faculties. About 150 students from 15 faculties and 7 countries replied to their invitation. Nowadays, the number of member countries exceeds 30 and countries outside Europe are also included. This informal students’ meeting has gained great importance over the years and its organisation has become more complicated.

Nowadays, three most popular citation databases are Web of Science (WoS), Scopus and Google Scholar (GS). In contrast to WoS and Scopus, GS is freely accessible. Comparing the three citation databases, WoS and Scopus have precisely defined and published criteria for selection of sources and papers from these sources. Google’s policy is quite non-transparent. In recent times, however, scientists have been increasingly citing data from GS in addition to data on presence and citations in databases WoS and Scopus. In the conclusion of a comparative analysis of number of citations of papers published in the Croatian Medical Journal in 2005 and 2006 according to the three citation databases, it is emphasized that GS may serve as an alternative bibliometric measure of citation frequency (Šember et al. 2010). An investigation of the number of citations for scientists from the fields of library and information sciences for the period 1996–2005, according to the three mentioned citation databases, has shown, among other things, that citations collected by GS are very useful. They are not of the same quality and significance as those from WoS and Scopus, but they point at a broader international echo of the cited papers than results obtained using WoS and Scopus (Meho, Yang 2007).

Dr. Drago Novak (1933–2011) was a prominent doctor of medicine and scientist, world traveller and global citizen, kind host and always a welcome guest, particularly known as a collector, admirer and connoisseur of old maps of Croatia. In addition, he was an admirer of fine art, a passionate seeker of books on cartography, history, art and a wide range of other scientific and popular areas. According to his will, his rich collection of maps, atlases and books in the field of cartography, also known as The Novak Collection, became a part of The Collection of Maps and Atlases of The National and University Library in Zagreb. The main part of The Novak Collection was given to the library at the end of 2012 and the smaller part was purchased in 2013.
