The map of Moravia (1569) by the renowned Vienna scholar, Paulus Fabricius (ca. 1528-1589), is still considered to be the oldest known cartographic representation of Moravia. This paper focuses on the cartographic analysis of the map with the aim to identify possible methods of its construction with regard to some known circumstances of its origin. The author of the map mentions in the appended texts that he travelled through Moravia several times. The methodology of the work is based on selected spatial analyses of the positional and height aspects of displayed settlements. The achieved results are compared and discussed in the context of other information sources, especially the existing settlement structure and contemporary communication network. The conclusions reveal a correlation between the density of the depicted settlements and the proximity of a modelled communication network. The orographic conditions of Moravia have a significant influence on the map content. The plains are covered in detail, hilly lands and highlands are rarely and randomly mapped, whereas the mountains are not described at all. In the peripheral parts of the area of interest, the author probably worked only with data from travel itineraries. With regard to achieved results, it can be assumed that there is potential to apply the established procedures to the analysis of old maps of similar type. Unlike later maps, they are based on the author's travelling experiences and impressions, rather than on complex measurements of geographical coordinates.

Islands Iž and Rava on Old Maps
Faričić, Josip

Exhibition Pax Anamarija, G&V Line Jadera, Zadar – Iž – Rava, 16–26 May 2014
The National Museum Zadar (Cultural-historical collection of the Island of Iž) and the University of Zadar prepared the exhibition Islands Iž and Rava on Old Maps on the occasion of the International Museum Day. The exhibition was set on a passenger ship Anamarija owned by company G &V Line Jadera which connects islands Iž and Rava with Zadar. Visitors, mostly passengers on that route and on the Zadar – Sali – Zadar route with the same ship could see the exhibition from May 16 to 26, 2014. Considering that 200 small catalogues were printed containing an introduction and a list of exhibits and that more catalogues had to be printed, it can be assumed that the exhibition of old maps was very interesting to inhabitants of Iž and Rava, as well as other people who wanted to see how those islands were represented on maps in the past. Vladimir Alavanja provided the idea for the exhibition, and its form and location were arranged with Josip Faričić from the Department of Geography of the University of Zagreb. Two passenger saloons aboard Anamarija were chosen as the location of the exhibition in order to present the exhibits to the inhabitants and frequent travellers from Iž to Rava in the way that the maps were contextualized in the space they represent. The exhibits were placed as sections of high-quality prints of 30 selected maps and charts. Sections of old maps were printed on a high-quality paper, framed and hanged in place of curtains on ships windows. Art historian Koraljka Alavanja conceived such an artistic arrangement.

The Role of the Geodetic Profession in Linking the Land Registry and Book of Deposited Contracts

Array
A large majority of apartment tenures for apartments acquired at the beginning of the 1990s in Croatia have not yet been entered in the Land Registry. The reason for not entering ownership in the books is the same or almost the same as during purchase: the inconsistency of official data on lots on which buildings have been built, i.e. data from the Cadastre and the Land Registry, incomplete building documentation for completed structures and unresolved ownership issues regarding cadastre lots (e.g. those still owned by a local authority, companies which no longer exist, unknown proprietors, etc.). The Act on Ownership and the Regulations on Linking the Book of Deposited Contracts and the Land Registry prescribe the entry of apartment ownership, as recorded in the Book of Deposited Contracts, in the Land Registry. Taking into consideration the complexity of the issue, this paper elaborates the facts, obstacles and proposals in the process of linking the Land Registry with the Book of Deposited Contracts, from the surveyor’s point of view with regard to analysing the problem. Surveying is the profession competent to link and coordinate the state of data on cadastre lots on which buildings containing apartments with tenancy rights have been built. Using specific information provided by three building managers, the facts on ownership entry in the Land Registry and the Book of Deposited Contracts of actual buildings are presented in this paper. Furthermore, an overview is provided of the preliminary actions required, in the form of producing suitable surveying plans to give building managers direction and some guidance as to which steps to take in successfully tackling the issue of linking the Land Registry with the Book of Deposited Contracts.

The Representation of the Hungarian Towns in Domenico Zenoi's and Paolo Forlani's Cartographic Work
Szalai, Béla
Abel Jeno u. 8, 1113 Budapest
In the mid-16th century Venice was the European center of cartography. The two most distinguished representatives of the Venetian school of cartography, which included their close collaborators, Natale Bonifacio and Martin Rota Kolunic from Šibenik in Dalmatia, were Domenico Zenoi and Paolo Forlani. The study deals with their cartographic and publishing activity, their relationship and rivalry within the context of the Venetian cartographic production and analyzes in detail their engravings of the Hungarian towns at the time of the Ottoman conquests, including the siege and the fall of the fortress Sziget during the command of Nikola Šubić Zrinyi. The analysis is based on the five extant copies of Zenoi's and Forlani's collections of views, two of which have been unknown until discovered by the author in the Budapest National Library.
Keywords: Cartography; Venice; Zenoi; Forlani; Hungarian towns; Ottoman conquests

THE NOVAK COLLECTION. Mappae Croaticae in the National and University Library Collection of Maps and Atlases (ZBIRKA NOVAK. Mappae Croaticae u Zbirci zemljovida i atlasa NSK) by Dubravka Mlinarić and Mira Miletić Drder was published in Croatian at the end of 2017 and launched officially on 28 February 2018 at the National and University Library (NUL). The publisher was the Library, with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Croatia. The book is 319 pages long and is an original scholarly work which presents for the first time one of the most important cartographic collections in Croatia. The authors are top experts and scientists in the history of cartography and nobody knows the Novak Collection better than they do (apart from its owner and author, the late Dr. Drago Novak). Many years of work, some with him during his lifetime, lie behind this edition.

Concept and Establishment of the Mine Information System within the CROMAC GIP Project
Biljecki, Zvonko
Pavičić, Stipica
Tonković, Tomislav
Array
In order to solve mine problems in the Republic of Croatia, a unique project CROMAC GIP (Croatian Mine Action Centre Geoinformation Project) has been initiated significantly increasing the functional quality of the existing Mine Information System (MIS). Since mine problems are closely related to space, geodata are a crucial part of MIS intended for monitoring and planning of demining. Since the moment the Croatian Mine Action Centre was funded till today, the process of demining has progressed. The implementation of a topographic database in accordance with the CROTIS data model and the usage of orthophoto data produced according to the official product specifications can be pointed out in that progress. Usage of such geodata requires a sophisticated information system that enables a simultaneous usage of geodata and other data connected with solving mine problems. In order to reach all goals in demining and to use all advantages of geodata, it was indispensable to upgrade the existing Mine Information System by merging geodata and HCR data and to collect new data according to the standardized procedures, but controlling at the same time the quality and automated procedures of uploading into the system. Apart from being constructed in accordance with the Standard Operative Procedures (SOP), the modernised MIS is also based on generally accepted standards in the field of geoinformation and it is implemented on advanced technology. The core of the system is the Oracle database, and GeoMedia is a WebMap Professional tool on the basis of which the distribution and the work with spatial data is possible on intranet/Internet. In order to achieve full efficiency of the system, it is necessary to provide high quality and updated geodata. In this respect, photogrammetric data are the most efficient solution.

Scale and True Scale?

According to Snyder (1987), no map projection shows scale correctly throughout the map, but there are usually one or more lines on the map along which the scale remains true. By choosing the locations of these lines properly, the distortions elsewhere may be minimized, although some distortions may still be large, depending on the size of the area being mapped and the projection. Some projections show true scale between one or two points and every other point on the map, or along every meridian. These are called equidistant projections.

First Croatian Geomagnetic Observatory in Lonjsko Polje
Markušić, Snježana
Herak, Davorka
Mandić, Igor
Earth’s magnetic field, geomagnetic field, is a very complex system that varies on a range of scales, both in the space and time domains. The variability of Earth’s magnetic field is the result of various processes, ranging from Earth’s deep interior, its crust, ionosphere, magnetosphere, all the way to the Sun. Geomagnetic field is a vector quantity and is described by geomagnetic elements i.e. mutually orthogonal components X (northerly intensity), Y (easterly intensity) and Z (vertical intensity, positive downwards). The elements describing the direction of the field are declination D and inclination I.

Geographical Names on 16th and 17th Century Maps of Croatia
Faričić, Josip
Array
The paper deals with geographical names (toponyms) on maps of Croatia published during the 16th and 17th century. Since this is a very complex problem area, only a few basic problems concerning the historical development of toponyms on old maps have been emphasized. As a result of the general development in cartography and "crystallization" of geographical knowledge about Croatia in the 16th century, these maps have become a valuable source of toponyms. Although Latin, Italian and German toponyms were still dominant, more and more Croatian toponyms can be found, especially on maps made by Croatian authors or the authors who were familiar with Croatian regions. Toponymy on old maps of Croatia considerably reflects the significance of Croatian regions in trading and geo-strategic system in Europe at the time.

Johann Christoph Müller is one of the most significant cartographers of the first half of the 18th century. His work is of special importance for cartography of Hungary, Croatia, Austria and other Danube-basin countries. The special value of Müller's topographic and cartographic work is that he produced maps based on land surveys and not only using existing maps. His work is great, but still insufficiently explored.

Map Projection Transitions is a very successful web application about map projections. The web page (http://www.jasondavies.com/maps/transition) presents a world map with graticule and country borders in the oblique Aitoff projection, with the South Pole. The map is not static, but animated. The South Pole moves toward the bottom and Earth rotates around its poles. The animation lasts five seconds, after which the projection changes and movement continues for five seconds, after which the projection changes again. Names of projections appear in a separate window. There are a total of 56 projections. The South Pole eventually becomes invisible and the North Pole appears at the top. Various parts of Earth appear in the center of the map by rotating around the poles.

Ethnic maps have regained importance and are again frequently published, due to an increase in ethnic consciousness, many ethnic conflicts and the attempts of young states particularly in eastern Europe to present themselves as nation states by ethnic maps. Questions of their methodology, of how suitable individual ethno-cartographic methods are to depict certain ethnic structures and whether they are applied correctly or not are therefore on the agenda of cartography as a formal science. This paper investigates the suitability of the main ethno-cartographic methods (areal method, dot spread method, diagram method) to render certain ethnic structures.

8 – 10 May, 2015, Buzet, Croatia
The Croatian Cartographic Society organized the 11th Conference on Cartography and Geoinformation in Buzet (Croatia) from May 8 to 10, 2015. By organizing the conference during the International Map Year (IMY), the Croatian Cartographic Society wanted to contribute to the development of geoinformatics, cartography and related fields. A wide range of topics and renowned invited lecturers guaranteed interesting lectures and a contemporary approach.
The conference was held in the Fontana hotel, situated in the centre of Buzet, a city in Istria with approximately 6000 inhabitants. Buzet is located in the northernmost continental part of Istria, between three large cities: Rijeka, Trieste and Pula. The area is very diverse, with altitudes from 10 m to more than 1000 m, meaning the climate varies significantly, from Mediterranean climate in the valley of Mirna River to continental climate in the mountainous part of Ćićarija. The old city of Buzet is located at 150 m high hill above the valley of Mirna, while the newer part of the city, Fontana, develops in the foothills. Buzet is famous for its truffles.
The conference was endorsed by the International Cartographic Association – ICA, Croatian Academy of Engineering and the Istria County. The conference lasted for three days and there were about 60 participants.

Possibility of Preparing Thematic Maps Through Developing of the Geographic Information System (GIS)
Husnjak, Stjepan
Bogunović, Matko
Array
It is a well known fact that nowadays planning of sustainable development and land use requires a lot of reliable and good quality information, which serves as the basis for timely and adequate decision-making. One of the most important forms of information is presented in various maps. Until recently, preparing of such data was, no doubt, a rather complex and time-consuming task. However, at present, thanks to, first of all, the GIS technology it is possible to develop corresponding geographic information systems with databases which then allow comparatively simple and quick preparing of necessary thematic maps. The paper first presents the method of developing the Geographic and Land Information System (GLIS) of the Karlovac County which, although developed for the purpose of agricultural development, may also be used in the development of forestry, environment protection, physical planning, water management and for soil conservation and regulation. Several examples illustrate the possibilities of preparing of specialised maps based on this GLIS. The basic data for developing of the geographic and land information system were the data of the Basic Soil Maps and topographic maps of the Republic of Croatia at the scale of 1:50 000 or 1:25 000, and the data from other studies made for the purpose of agricultural development in the area. These data, together with the results of processing and analysing of this data, by digitalisation, generalisation and interpolation, were incorporated into an integrated database of the geographic and land information system by using Microstation, AutoCad, ArcInfo, ArcWiew and Access software and the corresponding hardware. GLIS database consists of two parts. The first part includes the data referring to polygons - pedological contours, and the other part the data on pedological profiles. The base is organised in a way that enable the preparation of different thematic maps, but it can be also used in digital form allowing simple and easy access by the ArcWiew program package to all information, either by the base search or by putting questions. The data included in the database are the basis for preparation of numerous specialised thematic maps at various scales. As an example of the use of GLIS for agricultural development, a thematic map showing soil suitability for vegetable production was made, which, by area inventory shows that in the County there are 15 197.6 ha of soils suitable for vegetable production, which is only 4.56% of the total area of soil. The second example of the use of GLIS is in physical planning, where the land classification map was made, defining soils of classes 1 through 5, which are protected by the law (N.N. 54/1994) from being used for non-agricultural purposes. Such soils comprise the area of 189 057.0 ha, which is 56.79% of the total area. Thus, these soils must be paid proper attention and protected from uncontrolled and unjustified use for purposes other than agriculture. Other examples of the use of GLIS is in land conservation and development. The specialised map was made showing the requirements for liming, which allows determining the distribution and areas of soils that require this agrotechnical measure.

Landscape planning is a branch of the interdisciplinary profession of landscape architecture, which is based on landscape quality protection, and focuses on harmonising different values and interests in spatial development. The modern paradigm of the landscape is based on multidimensionality and interdisciplinarity, which makes the application of GIS indispensable in researching and analysing landscape approaches. This paper presents the application of GIS within the methods and tools of landscape planning, from the perspective of the landscape architecture profession in Croatia, involving the following methods: landscape evaluation, spatial modelling, development of strategic plans, landscape and environmental impact assessment including visual analysis and simulations, landscape character assessment, and landscape plans. The paper also highlights the diversity of potential landscape planning approaches within the instruments of different sectors, concentrating on responsibility for the landscape, spatial planning, natural and environmental protection, conservation of cultural heritage, land policies, rural and tourist development, and energy issues.
The paper also indicates that, despite signing the European Landscape Convention, via which Croatia showed interest in innovative planning, conservation and management approaches, there has still been no significant shift at the institutional level, with the occasional implementation of the landscape approaches in practice. The lack of use of GIS tools is especially evident within different sectoral instruments, at all levels of spatial thinking and decision-making.

The paper describes Internet information sources divided into following three groups: bibliographic databases, citation databases and databases with full texts including electronic journals. Bibliographic databases Bibliographia Cartographica, GEOPHOKA, Scopus and Current Contents (CC) are analyzed concerning cartographic content representation. Searching the Current Contents database resulted in data about cartographers with more than 10 papers in CC journals. According to the Web of Science citation database, data are given about the most cited cartographers in papers published during the period between 1955 and the end of 2008 on the condition that each paper was cited at least once between 2000 and 2008. Data are also given about two most cited cartographic papers in the last 50 years. The PERO browser (web service of the Ruđer Bošković Institute) was used to make a list of cartographic and related electronic journals and electronic versions of printed journals with full text available to Croatian academic and scientific community.

Carl Ritter von Ghega was proclaimed 2018 Surveyor of the Year on 21 March 2018. In this paper, we explore how this Austrian of Albanian extraction, born in Venice, played an important role in geodesy and the surveying profession and the honours he got up to the present day. We investigate his background and details of his professional path, education and most important contributions in the areas of surveying and engineering at large. We describe his most significant achievement, that is, the Semmering Railway, which was dismissed at the time as impossible to achieve. In 1998, the Semmering Railway was inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Apart from this project, which left a great impression on the engineering profession, von Ghega also developed the Borovnica Viaduct built in the mid-19th century in Slovenia.

Communicating data has become vital in an increasingly data-dependent society. Because data are often communicated graphically, many colleges and universities are offering courses that teach the principles of data visualisation. In this article, the author reflects on his experience of teaching such a course at a liberal arts college. The course introduced students to the tidyverse suite of packages for the programming language R, including the data visualisation package ggplot2, which implements Wilkinson’s (2005) ‘grammar of graphics’. The packages sf and tmap were used to extend the capabilities of the tidyverse packages for analysing geospatial data and producing thematic maps. This article provides insights into effective teaching strategies, including intended learning outcomes, the core syllabus, pedagogy and assessment. Sample tasks and visualisations are also presented to demonstrate how essential cartographic skills were imparted to students.

In 2020, the Cartographic Dictionary with slightly more than 2,500 terms was published by the Croatian Cartographic Society and Dominović Publisher (Frančula et al. 2020). Here we publish the terms that appeared in professional literature after the publication of the Cartographic Dictionary, as well as the terms that we failed to include in the dictionary.
All terms are arranged alphabetically. When a name consists of two or more words, the first is always a noun. For example, approximately equivalent projection is included in the dictionary as projection, approximately equivalent. A comma means that the usual word order is reversed. Names in foreign languages are entered in the dictionary in the same way.

Demands Set Upon Modern Cartographic Visualization
Frangeš, Stanislav
Array
Scientific cartography has the task to develop and research new methods of cartographic visualization. General demands are set upon modern cartographic visualization, which encompasses digital cartography and computer graphics: legibility, clearness, accuracy, plainness and aesthetics. In this paper, it is explained in detail what demands should be met in order to satisfy the general demands set. In order to satisfy the demand of legibility, one should respect conditions of minimal sizes, appropriate graphical density and better differentiation of known features. Demand of clearness needs to be met by fulfilling conditions of simplicity, contrasting quality and layer arrangement of cartographic representation. Accuracy, as the demand on cartographic visualization, can be divided into positioning accuracy and accuracy signs. For fulfilling the demand of plainness, the conditions of symbolism, traditionalism and hierarchic organization should be met. Demand of aesthetics will be met if the conditions of beauty and harmony are fulfilled.

Area Preserving Cartographic Line Generalizaton

Array
Cartographic line generalization is a generalization with the primary purpose of obtaining a line shape suitable for representation on maps at smaller scales than the scale of the given lines. Existing literature also differentiates model generalization and geographic generalization, each with a primary purpose. A new algorithm for cartographic generalization with distinct property of area preservation is described in this paper. The algorithm yields generalized lines with a subset of points from given lines together with new points. For that reason, it can be considered partially as simplification and partially as a smoothing process. Area preservation is not often considered in research on cartographic line generalization. Such research mostly stresses the importance of the line shape. A detailed description of the new algorithm is given in this paper, as well as the results of the application on coastlines. A comparison with manual line generalization, the Douglas-Peucker simplification algorithm, the Boyle smoothing algorithm and the combination of the latter two is also given. The tests show the new algorithm yields satisfactory results for cartographic line generalization. The property of area preservation is especially suitable for application in GIS when attributes are represented or analysed in regard to object areas.

Street and Square Names as Reflections of Cultural and Historical Heritage
Mirošević, Lena Mirošević
University of Zadar, Department of Geography, Tuđmanova 24i, 23000 Zadar, Croatia
Array
This paper analyzes the nomenclature of streets in selected cities in the historical/geographical region of Dalmatia, with the aim of interpreting the presence and prominence of spatial identification levels. Dalmatia is traditionally recognized as the southern region of Croatia, not determined by state or internal administrative borders, and possessing no specific natural features which single it out as a specific region, yet it can be defined as a historical/geographical region. As a consequence, among other things, the population can be identified regionally, as a result of complex evolutionary processes and border dynamics. Therefore, this paper adopts a cultural geographic approach, in which the subject of research is the cultural landscape and selected elements: names of streets and squares (odonyms). Since they are ubiquitous and pervasive, odonyms embody complex symbolism and contribute to the creation of a community’s spatial identification.

Impact Factor of Geoinformatic CC Journals
Frančula, Nedjeljko
Array
CC journals are an abbreviation for journals included into the Current Contents (CC) bibliographic base. CC is the most popular bibliographic database in Croatia. Its popularity is due to relatively strict criteria of journal selection, coverage of all scientific fields, frequent updates, paper abstracts/summaries, author addresses, publisher names and addresses, possibility to review content of journal issues, and additional key words which facilitate searches (On line databases, Manual, http://www.online-baze.hr/ob/novosti; link on the right side of the title page).

The paper describes surveying a part of the meridian arc in Lapland (border of Sweden and Finland). The field team had great difficulty with the climate and terrain configuration. However, they managed to prove that the Earth is roughly shaped as a rotational ellipsoid and confirm theoretical assumptions on Newton and Huygens that the arc length of one meridian degree near a pole is greater than at smaller latitudes.

500th Anniversary of Gerard Mercator's Birth
Kljajić, Ivka
Array
Mercator was a geographer, mathematician, astronomer, globe producer, constructor of scientific instruments, copper engraver, cartographer, surveryor and publisher. The conformal cylindrical projection was named the Mercator projection after him. The normal aspect Mercator projection is especially important in navigation because rhumb lines are mapped as straight lines in that projection. The transverse Mercator projection is used in official cartography of many countries. The Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) projection is in military use (NATO). In addition, Mercator was the first to use the term atlas for a map collection.
